It begins many different ways: an ethnic minority, hounded in the ghetto hears rumors of a city of acceptance; a disgraced noble, in the firelight of a burning palace, begs his ex-advisers for a place to escape to; thieves in the deep woods, hiding from the law, seek a place where there is none.

They come to the foot of a great cliff, the faces of long dead kings and forgotten gods carved into the rock. Atop this plateau, they see a city surrounded by eight story alabaster walls, broken by a thousand doors and windows. A city of exile, a city of secrets.

They come to Kaer Maga.
